Competition Shooting – My First IDPA Match

Going to the local gun range is good but very limited.  Everyone should indeed visit their local gun shooting range periodically to maintain their skills and familiarity with their tools.  You don’t want to grab your gun in an emergency and have to spend time trying to remember how to make it go bang.  But as I said, a simple gun range is limited in that you may not use a holster at most ranges, you can’t move from your lane position with a loaded weapon, and it’s all very calm and relaxed while you fire at a static paper target with maximum accuracy.  As such, range shooting does not come anywhere close to a real life situation where you might have to defend your life or your family.

Enter IDPA which stands for International Defensive Pistol Association.  It was founded in the mid 90s to provide more realistic scenarios for competition and training. It simulates self defense scenarios and real life encounters to give participants active concealed cover training that goes beyond simply standing at a range bench and killing paper.  Now, no simulation is ever going to actually provide the anxiety of a real life gun battle but it at least gets you moving and using more of your brain to complete the scenarios.

I knew that I needed to be there by 8:00 AM to be able to attend a newcomer briefing, which I did.  However, there were a lot of people who showed up to participate which took a long time to get them all signed in.  Sixty six participants showed up which is the most they’ve had in several months.  In addition, there were 16 new shooters all wanting to try an IDPA match for themselves.  So as registration went long, so did the newcomer briefing.

At the briefing we were schooled on safety rules, protocol, safety rules, scoring, safety rules, garments (you are supposed to be dressed for concealed cover), safety rules, advice on how to approach the match as a new never been tested first time shooter, and more safety rules.

Did I mention that they discussed “safety rules”?  Safety is paramount at an IDPA match.  It is the first consideration in anything you do with your gun.  Here are just a few of the safety rules:

  • Your gun never leaves its holster except and unless directed by a “Safety Officer” (SO) to do so, or at the safe handling zone.
  • Your finger must never be on the trigger except when aimed and ready to fire at a threat (target), especially when moving to the next firing position.
  • Your gun must be unloaded at completion of each stage in the presence of the SO who must see the magazine ejected, see an empty chamber and witness the trigger pulled at which time he will declare the range ‘safe’ and instruct you to return the gun to your holster.
  • Never drop your gun.  It will result in a disqualification.
  • Never shoot at the ground, accidently or otherwise, within 6 feet of yourself or anyone else (disqualification).
  • The gun muzzle must not break the 180 degree rule.
  • And many more.

Needless to say, they take safety very seriously, as they should.  They want everyone to be able to walk out of there.  You are all playing with a potentially dangerous and lethal tool.  But after all of that, they want everyone to have fun with it – which I think is impossible not to do.  I mean, you’re going to have fun.  I don’t know how you can help it.

So, off we went to our respective groups for the match which had already begun.  There are 8 stages grouped in 4 locations with 2 each.  Each group of about 15-20 people went to one of the four bays where there are 2 stages.  As each group of two stages is completed, you move as a group to the next bay of two stages until everyone has completed all eight stages.  On this day, that took us over 6 hours.  They tell me that normally they are about 4-5 hours.

Now, normally I am a very good shot at a regular range or out at one of our fun shoots with the Big Thunder Gun Club in the desert, but this is a new dynamic.  You have a lot of things to think about and you have to move too.  Most of the stages required you to move either from one firing location to another or to move while shooting.  On my first stage, I think I completely missed two of the targets or at least scored a “failed to neutralize” (FTN).  Hey, it was my first time.  My second and third stages were a little better but not much.  However, by the time I got to my fourth stage, I had calmed down and was scoring much better as I took my time to aim, and some of the basics started to set in and become more natural.

The stages are set up with simulated walls as “hard cover”, sometimes with windows or doors, sometimes barrels as “hard cover” and cardboard targets, which are in a rough human silhouette, that represent a threat that must be taken out.  However, some of the cardboard silhouettes represent an innocent bystander or hostage, and of course, you’re not supposed to shoot those.  I’ve got to say though, some of the hostages had a bad day, although not by me.   I think I only shot one in the head on my first stage.

Scoring is fairly simple.  You are timed on each stage.  The SO asks for you to acknowledge when you are ready, says “stand by” and a buzzer goes off giving you the signal to go.  You draw you gun from concealment and proceed to attack the course and the threats.  After two shooters have gone and the range is declared “safe” by the SO, we all move up to the target area where the scores are read and the holes taped up for the next shooter.  The scoring is minus zero (-0) for a center of mass shot or head shot, minus one (-1) for the next ring, and minus three (-3) for the outer most ring.  If all shots land in the minus three zone you receive a “failure to neutralize” (FTN) which is a minus five (-5) added to your minus threes.  Any “procedural” violations such as not remaining behind cover will give you a minus five (-5).  Each of these numbers represents a half second that is added to your time.  They add them all up, multiply them by 0.5, and add that many seconds to your score.  Simple, right?  Well don’t worry.  They do all of the scoring.  All you have to do is shoot and help tape the holes in the targets.

Most of the stages require about 15 – 18 shots to complete and one took a minimum of 22 which required three magazines.  We live in a land of ten round magazines so that is the most you can have in any magazine whether it holds more or not.  Most of the threat targets are static but there are some moving targets thrown in as well.

They tell you how many shots you are to put in each of the threats.  It could two or three, or even two to the body and one to the head.  You may have to shoot each threat with two or three consecutive shots or in “tactical sequence” which would mean that you would give each of say, three targets one shot, and then follow with a second shot to each.

I found it comforting in that the Safety Officers and seasoned veterans are all very friendly and helpful in that they want you to have a good time and learn from the experience.  Several times the SO we had in our group coached me on some things I might want to work on or pointers on how to better do something.  They of course, knew that I was a first timer since they give all the newbies a name tag which tells everyone that it is indeed your first time.  There was never any condemnation, only encouragement, guidance and a sharing of wisdom that has come from experience.

In as much as this was my first time, I don’t expect I had a very good score, as I was walking through most of the stages just to get the hang of it, (in fact they advise that for newbies).  Although, I did pick up the pace a little near the end as I got more familiar with the concept.  I did notice some of the other newbies having a much more difficult time with it than I, so I doubt I will be in last place.  But more than anything, I was competing against myself – trying to see how I would do with something new.  I’m sure I’ll get better the more I do it.  So I think I would give myself a passing grade.  What’s more, I had a lot of fun doing it.  Can’t wait until next time.

My impressions were all positive.  If you are interested in developing your tactical skills I believe you really should try this.  It is an excellent way to provide you with some practical training that goes beyond simply standing and shooting.  The course scenarios at IDPA matches are designed to simulate potentially life threatening encounters and test the skills that would be required to survive such encounters.  In addition, you end up meeting some great people all the while you’re having a great time.

If you think you might be interested in trying an IDPA match, I invite you to visit their website by clicking here.  Once there, click on “Club Info”  and “Club Listings” in the left sidebar and find the range closest to you.  Then go have a blast.

ABC Releases New Photo of Zimmerman’s Bloody Head

A new picture was released by ABC News today that clearly shows George Zimmerman’s head bleeding from the beating issued to him by Trayvon Martin.  The picture was taken only three minutes after Martin was shot and killed.  It clearly shows his head brutally battered with cuts, gashes, and blood all over his head, proving the reason that Trayvon Martin was finally shot in self defense by George Zimmerman.

This picture is finally substantiating what his contention has been all along that Trayvon Martin was bashing his head on the pavement after Martin had already broken Zimmerman’s nose.  Witnesses said that they heard Zimmerman crying for help as Martin had him pinned on the ground, sitting on him and beating the shit out him.

ABC is no doubt releasing this photo begrudgingly since they have been engaged in a campaign to drive an outcome that better fits their agenda to put guns and the self defense laws in a bad light.  The liberal media as a whole has been trying to discount this story from the beginning to make it better fit false claims being waged by Martin’s mother and sympathizers lead by the likes of Louis Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson.  NBC News even went to the extent to doctor a recording of the 9-1-1 call between Zimmerman and the police, to make it sound like he had spoken in a racially biased manner of the suspect he was observing and describing.

The result of the liberally biased reporting has been to paint a picture of Zimmerman as a racist who had chased down Martin and shot him in cold blood simply because he was black and wearing a ‘hoodie’.  Demonstrations sprang up in numerous cities in Florida and across the country demanding the immediate arrest and conviction of George Zimmerman, which was further fodder for the news media to report.  Of course, the general public couldn’t know that there was no evidence to support their calls since the media was hiding that fact and misleading them all.  The demonstrators already had their own biased agenda but would be further bolstered by the media.

But that is no excuse for Jackson and Farrakhan.  As purported “leaders” of the African-American community they should be urging the community to be calm and not be so quick to judge.  Instead they used the story to further their own racist agendas with rhetoric further stirring the masses to a fever pitch that would resemble “lynch mobs” of the nineteenth century.  The “New Black Panther Party” even put out a $10,000 bounty on Zimmerman’s head.  Since when is it legal for a supposed political party to offer a bounty for someone, especially when the local district attorney had determined that there was no evidence to support an arrest.  Jesse Jackson is now calling for the repeal of “stand your ground” laws and “castle doctrine” laws that have been so effective in lowering the violent crime rate in Florida.

Now, since the release of the new photo, Martin’s family attorney, Benjamin Crump, suggested that the photo didn’t mean anything because Zimmerman wasn’t brought to a hospital for stitches.  “How bad could it have been if they didn’t take him to the hospital [and] didn’t stitch him up,” he asked.  But then Zimmerman shouldn’t have to wait until he is mortally wounded to take action that would save his own life.  He had every reason to believe that his own life was in danger and he would be justified in pulling the trigger.

In another development, George Zimmerman was granted bail pending a $150,000 bond.  Reportedly, the Martin parents were “completely devastated” that bail was granted.  Zimmerman was not immediately released pending the details of the bail to be worked out and until his attorney can find a suitable safe location for Zimmerman to reside.  Apparently, there have been numerous death threats on Zimmerman and he is in fear for his life.  His attorneys want to be able to guarantee his safe return to the court for trial.

At the bail hearing, in an unortodox move, Zimmerman offered an apology to the Martin Family saying that he was truly “sorry for the loss of their son”.  The Martins attorney responded to the news media saying that they (the Martins) thought (characteristically) it was insincere and further said, “This was the most disingenuous, insulting thing I’ve ever seen.”

Give me a break!  Seriously?!

Zimmerman Arrest is a Sham

The idea that George Zimmerman would be arrested for shooting Trayvon Martin is setting itself up as one of the biggest examples of a miscarriage of justice since O.J. Simpson was acquitted.  With the incompetent special prosecutor Angela Corey producing a problematic arrest warrant, it is clear that she is merely pandering to the marauding hordes of lynch mobs calling for his arrest and liberal supporters in an election year.

The ‘lame stream media’ did not even know about this story until a month after and did not even seem to care until shills for the Obama administration brought it to light.  The so called “war on women” charge that the media had been trying to use to bolster Obama’s re-election campaign was not working and they needed something else.   It too was a trumped-up and manufactured premise that made no real sense but started when George Stephanopolis asked Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum if States should be allowed to ban birth control – something that was out of the blue and absolutely nobody had even considered.  So when that didn’t work for them, they went looking and found George Zimmerman.

Suddenly, the liberal media was all a frenzy trying to call Zimmerman a racist who ran down Martin and shot him in cold blood.  It didn’t matter that they didn’t have any of the facts straight.  They even tried to hide some of the facts and change statements by George Zimmerman to sound racist.  What they needed was to get people and other media fired up.  They dragged out Jesse Jackson and then Louis Farrakhan who were perfect to build up the racist charge since they are two of the biggest racists in the country.

Gradually parts of the incorrect story started to get corrected but never entirely.  After all, they aren’t interested in the truth; they’re just pushing an agenda.  There are several motives they are fulfilling, the first of which is giving Obama something to decry on his bully pulpit and ostensibly help his campaign.  Second, they want to point to the “stand your ground” laws as outdated and in need of repeal. And a third grand motive, as is always the case with liberals, is to point to guns and guns used in self-defense as ‘uncivilized’ and unacceptable in today’s liberal society.

Liberal anti-gun groups can’t stand the fact that guns are actually becoming increasingly acceptable in today’s society. More and more average citizens are buying guns and finding them to be an important tool to have available for use as a means of self-defense.  As an added benefit, they also are finding that shooting is fun.

This pendulum swing towards gun ownership and acceptance is frustrating the liberal anti-gun activists.  They try to point to every gun use and an unacceptable condition of society.

I just found today a reference to an article in Pravda West (the New York Times) that tried to claim that there were “almost 100,000 people killed with a gun” last year.  The actual figure is just over 13,000 gun homicides.  Their need to show guns as bad tremendously outweighs any desire to tell the truth.  But I digress.

Once Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan were involved stirring up the masses of sympathizers to a fever pitch, the Black Panthers actually offered a $10,000 bounty for the arrest of George Zimmerman.  Since when is it legal for any political group to place a bounty on a private citizen?  Why didn’t the media cry foul on this atrocity?

So, apparently ‘special prosecutor’ Angela Corey acted with a faulty arrest warrant to appease the activists so bent on seeing an arrest.  It didn’t matter that she had no evidence.  It’s clear in her arrest warrant that she has no evidence.  We pointed that out in our previous article titled “There are Serious Problems with the Zimmerman Arrest”.

On top of that, this is an election year.  She needs to appeal to her liberal base if she wants to be re-elected.  What better way than to arrest a racist child killer.  Unfortunately, this is going to backfire on her.  An acquittal is the only obvious outcome and she is going to be seen as a fool.

This Arrest Warrant looks to be a huge risk for Angela Corey.  It is a sham and total misuse of the courts for a political agenda.

Newt Gingerich Believes All Men Should Have the Right to Bear Arms

At the annual convention of the NRA, Newt Gingerich gave a rousing speech that was met with much laughter and applause from the members attending.  One thing that was most notable in the things he said was that he believes that everyone on earth deserves gun rights and should have their own Second Amendment.

He also said that if he were elected President, he would “submit to the United Nations a treaty that extends the right to bear arms as a human right for every person on the planet because every person on the planet deserves the right to defend themselves from those who would oppress them, those who would exploit them, rape them or kill them.”

Wow, compare that to our current “socialist in chief”.  He is currently lobbying members of Congress to adopt the U.N.’s proposed “Small Arms Treaty” that effectively would take away our guns and nullify our own Second Amendment.

I briefly digress here but the U.N. Small Arms Treaty that Obama is so enamored with would, “confiscate and destroy all “unauthorized” civilian firearms (exempting those owned by our government of course) and that means yours, ban the trade, sale and private ownership of semi-automatic weapons” (again, that means yours), and other egregious things.  I could go on here but I refer you to an article on this in Forbes magazine from June 7, 2011 for more information on this horrific idea Obama wants to foster if he is re-elected to another term.

But getting back to Mr. Newt, he has a more logical idea that is 180 degrees the opposite – imagine that.  This is the man whom I feel should be at the fore front of our Presidential campaign.  I mean if he were to become our candidate for President on the Republican side, he would no doubt mop the floor with Obama.  This man speaks from the heart, unlike the Bam Bam who needs a teleprompter to remember his lines.  Mr. Newt speaks from the heart because it is part of his core, his personal beliefs, and moral fortitude.  He doesn’t need to be reminded what he believes in his sole.

His speech to the NRA members brought them to their feet with applause when he announced his idea for a different treaty that would empower all people.  “Let’s take the George Soroses and Hillary Clintons head on,” Mr. Newt said to the cheering crowd.  “They represent a world in which elites disarm the rest of us so we are then helpless when elites turn sour and when evil reappears.”

He also told the NRA members that “he has been much too timid and moderate in his defense of gun rights.”  I think that perhaps he should have been a little more vocal on these issues before now.  Maybe he might be a little farther ahead in the race for President.  Afterall, this is the man, out of the current stable of contenders that should become our President.  I mean, think of it – President Gingerich.  Sounds good, doesn’t it? Pass it on.  Maybe it will catch on.  It’s not too late.

“The right to bear arms comes from our Creator, not our government.” – Newt Gingrich

There are Serious Problems with the Zimmerman Arrest

I have stayed out of the George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin controversy up until now, but it is just getting too ridiculous and I can’t ignore it anymore.  I mean, this is a man who was simply defending his own life.  If that gun had not gone off when it did, Zimmerman would be the one laying dead – not Martin.

It simply comes down to the fact that Trayvon Martin had George Zimmerman on the ground and was beating the shit out of him as Zimmerman was crying for help.  Several people heard and saw this.  As Martin was sitting on Zimmerman wailing away, he noticed that Zimmerman had a gun still concealed in its holster and he (Martin) tried to get it.  At that point, they both were struggling for the gun and it went off – killing Trayvon Martin.

Of course the media has to portray this as a racially motivated incident, perpetrated on a fine upstanding member of the community.  Then, as more of the truth comes out, they end up having to back track and revise their comments, but not before the liberal activists have been further fired up.  What is now coming out of this is a huge cry from the left to dismantle the “stand your ground” laws.

But the inept prosecutor who is simply reacting to the hordes of lynch mobs who have been fired up by likes of the racial activists Louis Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson, actually put forth an incompetent Arrest Affidavit that in any other jurisdiction would be laughed out of court by the judge and the media (well, maybe not the media).  But again we see a district attorney who is more concerned about re-election than a quest for the truth and who is simply pandering to her base of liberal voters.  I had originally planned on saying much more on this until I found an article that much more eloquently recaps this by John Work at the “American Thinker”.  In his article he states that the arrest affidavit brought by prosecutor Angela Corey is so poorly written and lacking in credible evidence it is laughable.  He further writes:

The Zimmerman affidavit is so deficient in properly sourced factual information and full of unsubstantiated, unsourced conclusions that I am appalled that a state’s attorney would even give it a second look.

Even Trayvon Martin’s mother has stated that she thinks that this whole incident is “an accident”.

Unfortunately, the real victim in this ridiculousness is going to end up being Florida’s hugely successful “stand your ground laws”.  After Zimmerman is finally acquitted, what is going to be the next push by the liberal activists is to repeal the “stand your ground laws” and “castle doctrine” laws that have been so effective at lowering the crime rate in Florida. But that doesn’t matter to the gun grabbers.  They won’t let an acquittal  of someone who killed a black man go unpunished.  They are more concerned about the criminals that end up as “victims” of law abiding citizens who thwart their illegal activities.  After all, we can’t have innocent people out there shooting criminals who have merely made crime their career choice.

In my opinion, George Zimmerman should be held up as an example of restraint, as a model of not over reacting with a gun on his person.  He did not use his weapon to try and end the incident earlier, scare Martin off, or even stop Martin from beating him until Martin himself went for the gun.  If anything, Zimmerman waited too long to invoke his weapon and threaten deadly force.

“American Guns” Returns in Two Weeks

After much controversy, and some speculation, we can announce that the popular Discovery show “American Guns” is returning for season two on April 25th. Many people have wondered if the show was coming back. I have been reassuring them that it was indeed going to have a second season and now it is here.

In late December of last year, we received notice from the producers that they were casting for the second season.  We subsequently posted a notice that the producers were looking for gun enthusiasts to become a part of the new season. You can read that post by clicking here.

Now the hit new reality show about an average family in the Denver area of Colorado, who just happen to own and operate one of the premier gun stores in the country, is starting its second season on a new night, Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 9:00 PM on the Discovery channel.

Rich Wyatt and his wife Renee, own Gunsmoke, located near Golden, Colorado, where they buy, sell and trade guns – from hand cannons to hunting rifles.  And if you don’t see what you want, they’ll build one for you – from nothing more than a block of metal.  Gunsmoke has the largest and most experienced group of gunsmiths in the state.  When the Wyatts aren’t building or selling guns, they’re shooting them.  No gun leaves their shop without being test fired by the family first. They, and the one-of-a-kind and historic guns they make and sell, are featured in the hit series on The Discovery Channel.

And YES, Paige will be back.  For all of you ‘pervs’ who think their 17 year old daughter is hot (well she is), Paige Wyatt is also returning to the show.  I get a lot of people stopping by here just looking for pictures of Paige.  Well, here it is.

If any of you might be wishing that you could be the next custom gun owner – you may still be able to.  The producers are always looking for gun collectors, gun enthusiasts, buyers, sellers and traders of guns to include in the show, if not for this season, then for next.

For more information, or to apply for the chance to be featured on the seires, please email Sandy Mehlman at sandy.mehlman@gmail.com for more information, or log on to www.facebook.com/metalflowersmedia or call at Sandy at 323.600.4582

Gun Control – Do We Really Need It?

I couldn’t believe it the other day when someone whom I thought knew me, asked me, “So how do you feel about Gun Control?  Don’t you think we really need it?”  As if she didn’t know my answer to that!?  Looking back I now think she was just trying to get me going, but that’s OK too.  But as for Gun Control, let me put it this way.  Another great blog that I link to here, Extrano’s Alley, has this prominently displayed on the top of his front page and it pretty much sums it up.

There are more than 22,402 restrictive gun laws in force.  Of those, not even one has ever reduced crime. In fact, crime has increased after each of these laws, and the amount depends on the severity and level of enforcement of the law.

The fact is, (borrowing from the great movie with Humphrey Bogart, “Sierra Madre”) we don’t need no stinking badges – to carry our guns.  I added the last four words, but what I mean is we shouldn’t need no stinking permit to carry a gun, concealed or otherwise.  We shouldn’t have to show good cause to be able carry a gun, concealed or otherwise.  Let’s face it, criminals certainly don’t feel they need a permit to carry a gun when they are a committing a crime.  They’re already breaking the law.  Why should they worry about a stinking gun permit.

We already have the only permit we should ever need in the Second Amendment. Our Founding Fathers gave us the right to carry guns and they recognized that it was a right that should never be taken from us lest we see ourselves as subjects of a tyrannical government.  Our Constitution was written to restrict what Government can do – not restrict what citizens can do.

Just what part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?  And yet, every year, legislators devise some new way to infringe upon law abiding gun owners and restrict their gun right.  These same legislators took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States”.   But with every new Gun Control law they are further destroying the Constitution.  With every new Gun Control law they are violating that sacred oath and deliberately shifting the balance of power into THEIR hands and into the hands of the criminals.

That quote I placed above is probably a little old in that there are many more than 22,402 restrictive gun laws in these United States.  There are more laws every year, especially in California and New York – and Illinois, and Massachusetts, but I digress.  But not one of those Gun Control laws has ever stopped a murder, a burglary, armed robbery, car jacking, sexual assault – again I could go on.

Gun Control laws do absolutely no good to anyone but the criminals, because they actually make their job easier.  They only restrict law abiding citizens from being able to effectively defend themselves from others who have made crime their career choice.

New gun laws do accomplish one thing in that they secure the liberal legislators in their seats.  They appease their liberal base such that they will vote for them next time, confident that the same liberal hacks will continue to support ridiculous Gun Control laws.

I used to think that these new laws they write and pass must at least make them feel good in that they must feel that they have done something positive to protect society and keep them safe.  But any more I can’t believe that they could possibly continue to be that stupid.  When all of the evidence flies in the face of that notion, how can they really believe something so ridiculous?  Gun Control laws actually work to increase crime in every area or state they are tried.  Every large population center that has strict gun control laws, has violent crime that is out of control and on the rise every year.  It has gotten so bad that the crime statistics that they are reporting are deliberately cooked to try and show decreasing crime so they can continue support their absurd notions that Gun Control laws are working.

Gun Control laws are against the law in my opinion as every one of them goes against the Constitution of the United States and the Second Amendment.  Guns should always have a place in our Society or we will cease to be a free people.   The only laws we should even consider might be restricting those who have mental disabilities and violent criminals, although the latter does absolutely no good anyway.  But guns should never be in the hands of the mentally disturbed.  Although, there is another problem, how do you find those people before they commit some insane act?

Other than that, I believe the Gun Control laws we have now should be repealed.  Every law abiding citizen should be required to own a gun and know how to safely use it.  Crime in our country would amazingly become so much more infrequent that news bureaus would have to look other places for their news stories.  Of course they are doing a lot of that now already by making up new false issues in order to further liberal bias.  But that is another rant altogether that perhaps I will have to take on another day.

A society that does not trust its citizens with guns does not trust its citizens.   When citizens live in a society where only the police and military have guns, they are living in a police state  -  Anonymous
