I Have a Gun But Don’t Know How To Use It

That is a statement that I hear all too often.  I’ve also heard people say that they have not even learned how to load it, let alone shoot it.  If it’s not that then it might be, “I have a gun, but I have shot it only a few times”, or something to that affect.  That bothers me – a lot.

GunfightWithout a doubt, if you are choosing to own a gun, it is not enough to have it, but you have to be trained how to use it and use it safely and effectively in an emergency.  Otherwise, you might as well find a rock that you can keep with you and on your nightstand, because that is about how valuable your gun is if you don’t know how to use it.  You might as well just throw it at your assailant.  You have made the decision to bring a gun into your home and your life, now learn how to use it properly so it’s not just a fancy paperweight.

Now that does not mean that you need to train like a Navy SEAL, or endeavor to become Rambo.  It simply means that you should seek out the advice and training from a qualified instructor whom can give you the basic training you need to not be afraid of your tool, as I have also heard some people say – they have it but are afraid of it.

Your gun is a tool.  You should not be afraid of it.  Military recruits are trained that their weapon is their friend, that they take it with them everywhere they go, they love it and know it from the inside out.  They teach the recruits how to become one with their gun.

gun-cleaning-1So you too need to learn about your gun.  You need to learn how to handle it safely, how to use it, how to load it, aim it, make it go bang, how to make it safe, how to take it apart, clean it and put it back together.  You need to learn how you can have it close to you at all times just as your cell phone is.

So for this, there all kinds of classes for all sorts of things, taught by all sorts of trainers.  You can start by asking the dealer from whom you bought your tool.  You can also search on the internet at sights such as Front Sight, NRA, USCCA, the Clinton Family Foundation, and others.

Front Sight 11-17-14 005I personally like to recommend Front Sight as it will clearly give you the most comprehensive handgun training of any I have found.  The NRA has many good courses, and the USCCA can provide training.  You can even ask friends whom are gun owners for instructors.  I don’t mean ask your friends to show you how to use your gun but get some qualified training.  But the point here is to seek out training.

As I said, don’t just rely on a family member or friend to show you the ropes.  Sometimes it is difficult to learn from someone you know.  We have all been there.  While they have the best of intentions and love to impart their knowledge, they may not be the most qualified to competently provide you with the information you need.  It could be that they actually need a class or two as well.

Front Sight 11-14-14 006The point here is that you need to train.  It is imperative that you know how to safely discharge you weapon when time comes to defend yourself.  But you also need to know when it is really that time.  Some may not recognize it at first and wait until it is too late.  Others may react too quickly or when it is not appropriate.  For example, you don’t want to shoot at someone who is running away from you.  You don’t want to shoot at someone stealing a bicycle from your yard – it is not a life threatening situation.  These are some of the finer points that you can learn from qualified in depth instruction.

IDPA Action 1One time training is not enough though.  Once you receive that initial training you need to practice.  After all, when you get your driver’s license, you regularly use the skills you learned in order to get that license.  So it follows that you need to regularly engage the act of shooting.  At the very least, you should visit your favorite shooting range and endeavor to get better at that skill.  But shooting at the typical range is a static, easy thing to do that does not resemble in any way, an encounter where you might need to defend your life.  So what do you do for that?

2012-04-21_11-38-30_721For one thing, if you are a Front Sight graduate, you can return for another class.  But if you want to stay closer to home, you can try an IDPA event.  There are IDPA chapters located around the country – likely near you.  IDPA requires you to move and to engage a scenario that roughly represents a real life scenario.  It allows you draw from your holster, think about which target to engage and perform under the pressure of time.  This engages your mind to make decisions while at the same time striving for accuracy.  These are very important issues.  Standing at a static shooting range stall is just about taking your time to shoot a piece of paper.  IDPA will help you to consider how you might react in an emergency.

Whatever you do, become familiar with your tool, don’t be afraid of it. You need to be confident and comfortable with it.  You need to know the mental, emotional, legal and financial aspects of that.  Know the law in your area to make sure that if you do have to use your gun that you don’t go to jail.  You will likely be arrested initially, but you want them to let go as soon as possible when they realize that you are one of the good guys and you acted appropriately.

Gun Law That May Really Save Lives

I came across a new Gun Law that has passed the Mississippi Legislature and has been signed by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, that may actually save lives. One of the things that I am always complaining about is that of the more than 22,000 gun laws on the books now, none of them has ever saved a life. But alas, we may now have one, and it goes into effect immediately.

Baptist ChurchOf course, this law would not even be necessary if they hadn’t previously passed a Gun Control law that made it illegal in the first place, but this new law now makes it legal for a     Continue reading

Gun Control – Do We Really Need It?

I couldn’t believe it the other day when someone whom I thought knew me, asked me, “So how do you feel about Gun Control?  Don’t you think we really need it?”  As if she didn’t know my answer to that!?  Looking back I now think she was just trying to get me going, but that’s OK too.  But as for Gun Control, let me put it this way.  Another great blog that I link to here, Extrano’s Alley, has this prominently displayed on the top of his front page and it pretty much sums it up.

There are more than 22,402 restrictive gun laws in force.  Of those, not even one has ever reduced crime. In fact, crime has increased after each of these laws, and the amount depends on the severity and level of enforcement of the law.

The fact is, (borrowing from the great movie with Humphrey Bogart, “Sierra Madre”) we don’t need no stinking badges – to carry our guns.  I added the last four words, but what I mean is we shouldn’t need no stinking permit to carry a gun, concealed or otherwise.  We shouldn’t have to show good cause to be able carry a gun, concealed or otherwise.  Let’s face it, criminals certainly don’t feel they need a permit to carry a gun when they are a committing a crime.  They’re already breaking the law.  Why should they worry about a stinking gun permit.

We already have the only permit we should ever need in the Second Amendment. Our Founding Fathers gave us the right to carry guns and they recognized that it was a right that should never be taken from us lest we see ourselves as subjects of a tyrannical government.  Our Constitution was written to restrict what Government can do – not restrict what citizens can do.

Just what part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?  And yet, every year, legislators devise some new way to infringe upon law abiding gun owners and restrict their gun right.  These same legislators took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States”.   But with every new Gun Control law they are further destroying the Constitution.  With every new Gun Control law they are violating that sacred oath and deliberately shifting the balance of power into THEIR hands and into the hands of the criminals.

That quote I placed above is probably a little old in that there are many more than 22,402 restrictive gun laws in these United States.  There are more laws every year, especially in California and New York – and Illinois, and Massachusetts, but I digress.  But not one of those Gun Control laws has ever stopped a murder, a burglary, armed robbery, car jacking, sexual assault – again I could go on.

Gun Control laws do absolutely no good to anyone but the criminals, because they actually make their job easier.  They only restrict law abiding citizens from being able to effectively defend themselves from others who have made crime their career choice.

New gun laws do accomplish one thing in that they secure the liberal legislators in their seats.  They appease their liberal base such that they will vote for them next time, confident that the same liberal hacks will continue to support ridiculous Gun Control laws.

I used to think that these new laws they write and pass must at least make them feel good in that they must feel that they have done something positive to protect society and keep them safe.  But any more I can’t believe that they could possibly continue to be that stupid.  When all of the evidence flies in the face of that notion, how can they really believe something so ridiculous?  Gun Control laws actually work to increase crime in every area or state they are tried.  Every large population center that has strict gun control laws, has violent crime that is out of control and on the rise every year.  It has gotten so bad that the crime statistics that they are reporting are deliberately cooked to try and show decreasing crime so they can continue support their absurd notions that Gun Control laws are working.

Gun Control laws are against the law in my opinion as every one of them goes against the Constitution of the United States and the Second Amendment.  Guns should always have a place in our Society or we will cease to be a free people.   The only laws we should even consider might be restricting those who have mental disabilities and violent criminals, although the latter does absolutely no good anyway.  But guns should never be in the hands of the mentally disturbed.  Although, there is another problem, how do you find those people before they commit some insane act?

Other than that, I believe the Gun Control laws we have now should be repealed.  Every law abiding citizen should be required to own a gun and know how to safely use it.  Crime in our country would amazingly become so much more infrequent that news bureaus would have to look other places for their news stories.  Of course they are doing a lot of that now already by making up new false issues in order to further liberal bias.  But that is another rant altogether that perhaps I will have to take on another day.

A society that does not trust its citizens with guns does not trust its citizens.   When citizens live in a society where only the police and military have guns, they are living in a police state  –  Anonymous

Sheriff Encourages Women to Carry Concealed Weapons

In a press conference Monday, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright suggested that women should obtain concealed carry weapons permits (CCW) and be prepared to defend themselves, because “our form of justice is not making it.”  He made this statement as he described and an attack on a South Carolina woman by a man who had repeatedly been arrested more than twenty times for numerous crimes and subsequently released back onto the street.  Said Sheriff Chuck Wright to “liberals”, “your form of justice isn’t workin’.  This ‘animal’ should not be allowed to walk among us,” speaking of the perpetrator of the attempted rape.

After describing the “horrific act” upon the victim, he went on to say that “it’s too bad that someone with a concealed weapons permit didn’t walk by and hear the cries.  That would have fixed this,” he said.

The Sheriff further went on to say, “Ladies, walk in groups.  Get a concealed weapons permit.  I want you to get a concealed weapons permit. I don’t want you to go for the mace.  I want you to go for the concealed weapons permit.”  “I am tired,” he said, “of looking at victims and saying were sorry, we’ve done the best we can to get them in jail.”  He later urged women to carry a .45 caliber handgun in a fanny pack while jogging.

Naturally, the sheriff is an opponent of gun control laws.  And, apparently he is also tired of the restrictions that liberal legislators have placed on citizens to provide for their own self defense.  “Gun control to me is being able to get your (gun) barrel back on target quick.  That’s gun control.  Gun Control for government purposes has never worked,” Wright said.  And he’s right.  Not one gun control law has ever reduced crime, or stopped a criminal from committing a gun crime.

Frankly, Sheriff Wright makes a lot of sense.  His words make sense for all citizens – not just women.  He is the type of sheriff we need more of, especially in California where the liberals are running amuck, unchecked and unopposed.  We need a national reciprocal concealed carry law and we need to make it less difficult for law abiding citizens to be able to obtain a carry concealed weapons permit.  We should follow the lead of Wyoming earlier this year that lifted most restrictions to obtaining a CCW becoming what is called a “Constitutional Carry” state.

Operation GunWalker Spawns New Gun Control Legislation

In two previous posts I have been warning that the primary reason Obama would commit treason such as he has with Operation Gun Walker (or Fast and Furious) and arm Mexican Drug lords, was so he would have reason to try to pass more gun control legislation.   Well today I hear that the liberal democrats in Congress are planning to introduce new gun control legislation today.

In an article by Katie Pavlich for the The Town Hall, she claims that several Democrats announced yesterday that they are planning to introduce new legislation today that is designed to “keep high powered firearms out of the hands of dangerous criminals, including the Mexican Drug Cartels”.  However, the legislation which is called the “Stop Gun Trafficking and Strengthen Law Enforcement Act”, will do no more than punish law abiding citizens and trample our Second Amendment Rights yet again.

Excuse me?!  It was the Obama Administration that allowed the drug cartels to freely purchase the “high powered firearms” in the first place.  The FBI and ATF all but forced the local gun sellers to complete the transactions against their own objections. Obama even funded the operations with money from the stimulus bills.  Problem is, he was hoping we wouldn’t find out about it.

And just as we predicted, here come the liberals with marching orders from President Obama, using it as a reason to gin up support for more gun control laws, with bills in hand. No gun control law is going to keep firearms out of the hands of the Mexican Drug lords, or any other criminal for that matter.  In fact, there is another blogger who has it stated another way:

“There are more than 22,399 restrictive gun laws in force. Of those, not even one has ever reduced crime.  In fact, crime has increased after each of these laws, and the amount depends on the severity and level of enforcement of the law.”

And it especially doesn’t matter how many gun laws we have if the Federal Government is willing to break them their selves to push a political agenda.  This must be what President Obama meant when he comforted anti gun members of his own party by saying, “we are working under the radar” on new measures.

House Representative Carolyn McCarthy who authored other gun control legislation earlier this year, is joined by Elijah Cummings, Carolyn B. Mahoney, to lead this new push.  And it will be a push in which they spare no effort to get it passed and signed.

It is time to contact your representatives and let them know you’re dissatisfaction with the legislation.

Wyoming Is Now a “Constitutional Carry” State

The Governor of the State of Wyoming recently signed a law effectively making the State of Wyoming the fourth state to adopt what is called a “Constitutional Carry” law, which means that citizens are not required to obtain a special, government issued permit or license to carry a concealed weapon.  Governor Matt Mead signed the legislation into law after the state’s House of Representatives passed the bill in a 48-8 vote several weeks ago.

While there have been no significant developments in concealed gun carry laws in most other states, Wyoming now has joined the ranks of three other states who already have constitutional carry laws including, Arizona, Alaska and Vermont.  A few other states, such as California, are actually looking to make their carry laws more restrictive in the wake of the horrific Arizona shooting that killed a Federal Judge and five other people. Gun law extremists miss no opportunity to exploit a terrible tragedy such as that to ramp up and advance their liberal agendas.

However, Colorado and Montana are currently considering similar proposals to Wyoming’s in their state legislatures.  House Bill 1205, currently in Colorado’s legislature has passed the House of Representative in a 40-25 vote.  It has now gone on to the Senate where it has been endorsed by the Senate Judiciary Committee by an 8-3 margin. Colorado’s bill will make it legal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

In Oklahoma, voters have an opportunity to approve an “open carry” law that would allow citizens to carry a weapon whether it is concealed or unconcealed, if they go through an approved state sponsored concealed weapons program.  This bill was unanimously approved by the House Public Safety Committee which put it on a statewide ballot where its future will be decided by the citizenry.

The push to expand permit free gun carry laws is coming from a increasing number of people who are concerned about being able to defend themselves in the face of a growing armed criminal element that would otherwise have an extreme advantage over unarmed citizens. It is driven by law abiding citizens who want the government to stay out of their face as they exercise their fundamental and civil right to own and carry property.  Arms, by the way, are the only enumerated property in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that you are guaranteed the right to possess.

The recent rise of the Tea Party and other constitutional conservatives has fortified a movement to bring “constitutional carry” to other states, giving push back to the sense that many Americans have allowed gun control activists to steadily erode their liberties for many years.  Legislators are recognizing that restrictive gun laws so far enacted have been unsuccessful at reducing violent gun crimes and more often exacerbate the problem.  When faced with statistics that show violent crime rates fell in less restrictive gun law jurisdictions, they realize that taking the guns away from law abiding citizens is not the answer.

In a recent interview, Florida State Senator, Greg Evers (R-Dist.2) stated, “I’ll feel safer around a law-abiding person openly carrying a firearm because criminals will stay away.  Criminals do commit crimes”, he said, “but they’re not all stupid: most criminals will avoid armed citizens because they don’t want to be shot.”

People who neglect the exercise of their constitutional rights, may soon find those rights have been usurped by the State.  First Arizona and now in Wyoming, the people are pushing back.
